Build up your confidence to be fashionable — September 28, 2018

Build up your confidence to be fashionable

We must have confidence for ourselves and our daily lives not only for ourselves but also for other people in our dress and right to wear what we owe accordingly to ourselves. It’s a thing of the day.

This is what I bring to others so that they also have the opportunity to wear what they want. We should also consider what other people will tell us. We will also have the capacity to keep in mind what we will do so that we will not be condemned by other people that they should not.

I did this so that other people would know what they should do or think if they would enjoy reading it hopefully they would also have the confidence that not only other people could be inspired but for everyone. We can wear what we want according to our gender. Let’s let others, we can live without them.

Having self-esteem is as much achive as we want in life because having confidence is a beautiful day-to-day life. We should not compare our self to others because it my hurt our feelings. Even if they were wearing what we want we should be with the flow and do not be stressed if there’s someone talking about it. We should love ourself, youre a gift so be thankful. There’s nothing would be the same if you did not exist. We must be positive even though we are looking at it. Wear what we want or what we love. Life is too short to waste you time to do nothing. When we are wearing what we want but we lack confidence we should not do that we should be focused on our self. The wearing of what we want is not selfish. It’s self-love it is the way to make your self happy.

How to Dress Vintage Chic Style in Everyday Clothes — September 21, 2018

How to Dress Vintage Chic Style in Everyday Clothes

Are you wondering how to look vintage chic wearing smart everyday clothes and fashion accessories? Do you want to change your usual dressing style for a sophisticated and classy look?

If you want to dress classy in a vintage-inspired way, even with some of your everyday clothes, you will find some helpful tips on how to achieve the style.

You don’t really need to change your entire wardrobe, neither do you need to have a hefty budget for this. Rather, what you need are some basics in your clothing collections and a good number of accessories.

We all know how accessorising can help dictate a vintage style; shoes, jewellery, hats, bags, etc… and as long as you take care of these finer details, you’ll be able to achieve that lady-like charm that’s so characteristic of vintage fashion.

So, how do you create the style of fashionable women of old with your modern clothing? By adding the most unexpected details to your ordinary looking outfits.

Let us see some of the basics first.

  • Wear items that are made with classic fabrics like cotton, linen, tweed, silk, wool, and linen. Clothing made of any of these fabrics always gives off an elegant flavour of their own.
  • Bold patterns and prints are very vintage and work well for a stylishly sophisticated look.
  • Neutral colours like black, white, cream, navy blue, emerald green, and grey are colours you must think of. You can, if you wish, dress head-to-toe in any of these colours but there is no hard and fast rule about your colour combination. Your combination can also be different shades or tints of the same colour (monochromatic dressing).
  • Your outfits must be tailored and form fitting so they can show off your figure and follow the curve of your waist. This is typical of vintage clothing. If need be, wear body form shapewear to give you the required curves. You can have some of your looser modern clothes altered to fit properly. If you are not a sewing enthusiast, get it done by a local tailor or seamstress.
  • Simple jewellery is the best way to go when aiming for a vintage chic style.
  • Vintage fashion is synonymous with modesty. You can’t wear crop or tank tops if you desire a classic style. Dresses and skirts hemlines should not go more than a couple of inches below the knee for day wear and full-length for formal wear and can be sweeping floor length for evening wear.
  • Don’t underestimate the clothing you already have in your closet. You can integrate and combine owned items in many ways you didn’t think possible.

The following type of clothing will give you that vintage chic look you aim to accomplish. You don’t necessarily require every item listed but the list will give you a good idea of what will work best for your new classic look.

  1. Tailored pants – Ankle, slight bootcut, straight, skinny, or wide-legged.
  2. Informal pants – Pedal pushers, culottes, jumpsuits, and shorts
  3. Skirts – High-waisted pencil skirt, midi, and ballerina style skirt,  full-circle skirt, swing skirt, flared, and wriggle skirt
  4. Dresses – Swing, shift, peplum, coat, and sheath dresses, ball gown, polo dress, shirt-waist dress, drop-waist dress, or flapper style dress.
  5. Tops – Long, short, cap, and sleeveless blouses, shirts with tiny buttons, cardigans, knit tops, puff-sleeve shirts, peasant tops and halter blouses.
  6. Jackets and Coats – Frock coat, blazers, faux-fur collar coats, wool long coats, swing coats, and trench coats, car coat, hooded cape coats, and vintage tweed coats in short jacket or long coat lengths.

Identifying features of vintage clothes include:

  1. Necklines  – square, sweetheart, cowl, and scoop necklines, collared necklines, V-neck, boatneck, or crew necklines.
  2. Collars – Peter Pan collars, embellished detachable collars, classic, portrait and boat-neck collars
  3. Cuffs – Traditional white cuffs, Frenchsquare and Mandarin cuffs, double cuffs, high 3 buttons cuffs or long pointed cuffs.

Vintage Chic Style with Classic Accessories

Nothing can throw off your vintage-inspired style than using the wrong fashion accessories. The shoes you wear and costume jewellery you adorn yourself with must round up your entire ensemble.

There are other good-to-haves too. Scarves, sunglasses, hats, purses, perhaps a parasol (if you want to fashionably dramatic), and purses are items that are best had in your vintage-inspired wardrobe because they are the finishing touches for all that’s been spoken about.

Jewellery

If you endeavour to achieve a classy and sophisticated style, ‘glam-up’ your attires for that Va-Va-Voom look by investing in some classic style costume jewellery that fits within your budget.

Vintage inspired costume jewellery doesn’t have to cost you much but you’ll need some pieces because they are the easiest and most affordable items you need to create a vintage-inspired stylish look.

The following items are what you should look out for:

  1. Earrings – Small hoops, cameos, studs (faux pearl or Swarovski), and chandelier earrings.
  2. Bracelets – Cuff bangles, cha-cha bracelets, tennis bracelets, and a wristwatch with metal or leather band, name bracelets, charm bracelets, wrap, and clamper bracelets.
  3. Necklaces – Long gold or silver chains with pendants made of faux pearls, birthstones, cameo, diamond solitaire, or gold cross including choker necklace, lockets, or bib necklaces.
  4. Rings – Delicate or statement rings, thin bands, heirloom rings, art deco rings, and the cocktail ring.
  5. Brooch and Pins – Whimsical and flirty pins, cameo brooches, personalised brooches, and gem-set pins.

Shoes

If you love to wear classic style apparel, you will love shopping for affordable vintage style shoes because you know that shoes (and handbags) make the most impressive statement in your dressing. Wear a nice suit with the wrong pair of shoes if a fashion faux pas.

Finding a fabulous pair of vintage-inspired shoes that fit in well with a wardrobe from another era is easy because there are lots of vintage-reproduction shoes that you’ll find to buy, the ones referred to as modern vintage shoes.

Women’s vintage shoe style reproductions to look out for are:

  • Espadrille wedges
  • Sling-backs
  • Lace-up Oxfords
  • T-straps
  • Mary Jane shoes
  • Saddle shoes
  • Peep toe shoes
  • Patent pumps
  • Lace-up boots
  • Ballet flats
  • Kitten heel pumps or boots
  • A pair of red shoes
  • Animal print flats
  • Stiletto heels(for evening or occasion wear)
  • Loafers
  • Moccasins
  • Sandals

Handbags and purses

Either with modern apparel or vintage-inspired clothing, adding a vintage style handbag or purse to an outfit is a unique way to set yourself a fashion signature.

It’s a good thing that vintage style leather and beaded bags, and clutch purses are constantly in style. Classic handbags are popular and never go out of style so it’s possible that many die-hard vintage fashion enthusiasts have a couple in their closets.

Today’s reproduction of vintage handbags now has special pockets for cell phones and other modern devices as you will find in many of the following bags and purses.

Other vintage style fashion accessories that are good to have are:

  1. Vintage Style Sunglasses – 50s cat eye sunglasses and browline sunglasses, 60s over-sized and retro square glasses, 70s tinted lenses, 80s aviator sunglasses, and 90s round wire-framed glasses.
  2. Hats – 20s cloche, 40s hats and berets, 50s pillbox hat, cartwheel, boater, fedora, half hats, fascinator hats, and retro pagoda hats.
  3. Vintage style umbrella – heart, parasols, and pagoda umbrellas (ruffle-edged, plain, stripes, or polka dots).
  4. Scarf – Scarves in solid or monochromatic colours made of cotton, light silk, or wool and patterned with florals, green foliage, stripes, paisleys,  or block colours.

The vintage chic style demands that the clothes and fashion accessories you wear are neat, clean, stylish, but simple. Clothing should be wrinkle-free and colour coordinated and it is important not to over-accessorize for a vintage-inspired look.

Womens vintage clothing is a green option.

Ok, so saving the nature might not be the first thing on your mind when you’re looking for vintage, but hey, you’re wearing something second-hand and original while reducing the pollution the fashion industry is dumping on our earth!

Vintage clothes has unusual fabrics and tailoring.

Unique vintage fashion clothes and details
    • The pieces have patterns, details and quality that you often can’t find in most affordable stores today. That’s a total wow-factor when it comes to style!

It’s not like the cookie-cutter clothes you see in our stores today. Vintage is unique and available in limited edition, and that prevents your style from becoming mainstream.

Most vintage clothing is of high quality.

Why? Because further back in time, our society wasn’t so industrialized as it is today. Meaning, most of the clothes in the past were made by hand and designers and pattern makers gave each piece love and attention.

Vintage fashion has something for everyone.

You can find something in vintage fashion that suits your personal style. From dramatic Art Deco 20’s-30’s to tailored 40’s-50’s. Flowy hippie 60’s and disco 70’s to rock & urban 80’s – so really, there’s something for everyone!

Vintage clothing never goes out of style.

(Ok, I’m not talking about the really, reaaaally old vintage, like Victorian, frilly pieces). Vintage is hip and charming. It’s timeless. It’s stylish. Vintage fashion adds depth and realness to your style.

It’s not intimidating as wearing high-end from top to toe, or slavish as the latest fashion trends. But only if you wear it right 😉 You’ll have to adapt to our modern society, so you might want to mix vintage with staples to balance the overall look.

I was mega excited to post this one! We all love an interesting fact, so I spent some time doing some research on the history of vintage clothing and fashion! I had loads of fun doing so, check these out!

Clothes produced before the 1920’s are considered to be ‘Antique Clothing’ and anything 10 years or older is considered to be ‘Vintage clothing’.

Clothes back in the day were much smaller because as years go on, us people grow larger and taller – so when you find a jacket in store that says a Large but would fit your baby siblings… That’s why!

Over 70% of the world’s population uses secondhand or vintage clothes (not even including the US!).

The vintage clothing and recycled clothing industry has saved over 1 million tons of clothing and textiles from ending up in our landfills each year.

The average lifetime of a piece of clothing is only around 3 years. That’s where we step in and help to save the day!

Buying vintage clothing has nothing but a positive effect on the environment unlike buying new. Let’s help out our little old planet with some recycling yeah!

The first ever pair of Doc martins were created from old tires. So if you’re ever stuck for cash for a new pair, just make sure you ask to borrow the tires from the family car first, you should be fine…

One of the oldest most recognisable brands we see, would be Woolrich.

The skirt is the second oldest piece of clothing to exist… and up until the 1600 – 1700’s women AND men wore them, who’s gonna be the first to bring it back then boys?

The zipper didn’t appear on garments until the late 30’s. The two original uses of the zipper back in the day were for closing boots and tobacco pouches. It was almost 20 years until the fashion industry introduced it to clothing! In the 1930’s, a campaign began for children’s clothing to feature zippers. This was top help them be able to dress themselves easier.

Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 20 years before the present day is considered vintage.[3] Retro, short for retrospective, or “vintage style,” usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Reproduction, or repro, clothing is a newly made copy of an older garment. Clothing produced more recently is usually called modern or contemporary fashion. Opinions vary for these definitions.

Vintage clothing is a form of ease in a fast moving world. Re-wearing clothes from a personal wardrobe and wearing newly acquired vintage and retro clothing, can be understood as a desire to recreate familiarity, or felicity, in a world that is rapidly changing and increasingly impersonal.[1]

Most vintage clothing has been previously worn, but a small percentage of pieces have not. These are often old warehouse stock, and more valuable than those that have been worn, especially if they have their original tags. Referred to as deadstock or new old stock (NOS), they nevertheless sometimes have flaws. Vintage clothing may be either commercially produced or handmade by individuals.

Popular places to buy vintage clothing include, charity-run second hand clothing shops, consignment shops, garage sales, car boot sales, flea markets, antique markets, estate salesauctions, vintage clothing shops and vintage fashion, textile or collectables fairs. One of the first regular fairs that was set up specifically to cater for the current demand for vintage clothing is Frock Me!. This event takes place regularly throughout the year in Chelsea, London as well as in Brighton. Vintage clothing is sometimes also obtained from older friends and relatives.

Typically in the United States, vintage clothing shops can be found clustered in college towns and artsy neighborhoods of cities. Sizing is a major factor – in most locations in the United States, the majority of the population would be unable to find vintage clothing that fits. In contrast to thrift stores that sell both vintage and contemporary used clothing, vintage clothing shops are usually for-profit enterprises, with the market mixed between small chains and independent stores. These stores typically range from 200 to 5,000 square feet in size, and will usually have a fitting room. In addition to selling clothing and accessories, many vintage clothing stores also buy clothing from the public in exchange for cash or store credit.

The advent of the internet has been a boon to the vintage clothing industry. It has increased the availability of specific and hard-to-get items and opened up prospective markets for sellers around the world. Popular places to acquire garments include online auctions (e.g. eBay), multi-vendor sites (e.g. Etsy), online vintage clothing shops and specialist forums. Many vintage clothing shops with physical locations now also sell their goods online.

Vintage clothing offers past and present clothing at low prices.  The reduced name brand clothes accomplish uniqueness and originality. Vintage shopping can be viewed as a continuation of discount culture, while simultaneously achieving an individual identity and exclusivity that the brand names have lost.[1]

Since the beginning of World War I the idea of vintage clothing or reusing clothing was a way of living. During World War I, most clothing was repaired, mended, or tailored for other family members or recycled within the home as rags or quilts.[2] The government conservation campaign used slogans such as “Make economy fashionable lest it become obligatory” resulted in an approximate 10% reduction in the production of trash.[2]

In the late 20th century there was as increased demand for high end name brands. During the 1980s, vintage clothing in North America increased because of the demand for reduce high-end name brands.[1] Now fashion is non selective as it used to be, as vintage clothing has moved to subculture to mass culture it is often not limited.[1]

Fashion is fast and at our finger tips. The very definition of fashion fuels the momentum for change, which creates demand for ongoing replacement of products with something that is new and fresh.[4]

This increase in interest is due in part to increased visibility, as vintage clothing was increasingly worn by top models and celebrities, e.g. Julia RobertsRenée ZellwegerChloë SevignyTatiana SorokkoKate Moss, and Dita Von Teese.[5][6] Popularity of period pieces set in the mid 20th century in television and film have also contributed to vintage’s popularity. There is even an international magazine called * Vintage Life – specifically a Women’s Fashion and Lifestyle Magazine.

There has also been an increasing interest in environmental sustainability in terms of reusing, recycling and repairing rather than throwing things away. Sometimes vintage items are upcycled via changing the hemline or other features for a more contemporary look. Vintage items in poor condition are also salvaged for reuse as part of new garments.

The textile recycling industry is the environmental part of the fashion industry. Throughout the world, used apparel products are salvaged as reclaimed textiles and put to new uses.[4]The textile recycling industry is able to process over ninety percent of the waste without the production of any new hazardous waste or harmful by product.[4]

A resurgence of historically based sub-cultural groups like rockabilly and swing dancing has also played a part in the increased interest in vintage clothes. In Finland the vintage scene has even spawned an officially recognized association or non-profit organization called Fintage out of common interest in the preservation of material culture and the environment.

Fashion design, throughout history has turned to previous eras for inspiration. Vintage clothing retains and increases in value due to the fact that it is genuinely from a past era.[7] In addition, authentic garments are made one at a time, with enough attention to detail to create an item that has long lasting value. Garments closely resembling original vintage (retro or antique) clothing are mass-produced, for the most part, in China. An example of this is the simple slip dresses that emerged in the early 1990s, a style that resembles a 1930s design, but upon examination will show that it only superficially resembles the real thing. These styles are generally referred to as “vintage style”, “vintage inspired” or “vintage reproductions”. They serve as a convenient alternative to those who admire an old style but prefer a modern interpretation. Sellers claim consumer advantage in that, unlike the original garments, they are usually available in a range of sizes and perhaps, colours and/or fabrics, and can be sold much cheaper.

How to Wear Vintage Clothing Without Looking Like You’re Wearing a Costume —

How to Wear Vintage Clothing Without Looking Like You’re Wearing a Costume

A common concern I hear from people who have yet to take the plunge into the world of vintage clothing is that, if they do, they will look like they are wearing a costume.

2015-02-04-huffpost5.jpg

First of all, let me preface this by stating that there is nothing wrong with looking like you’re wearing a costume when you’re not. Personally, I absolutely adore when someone’s style treads that line between theatricality and reality and I’m all for wearing whatever it is that you feel good in, especially if what you feel good in is an expression of your spirit and creativity.

Of course, not everybody feels that way, and a common concern I hear from people who have yet to take the plunge into the world of vintage clothing is that, if they do, they will look like they are wearing a costume. Here are 5 tips for wearing vintage while avoiding exactly that.

1. Pick garments that look like current trends. As a vintage seller, I can tell you that lots of modern designers and fashion houses have massive archives of vintage garments that they are constantly adding to and from which they draw inspiration. In fact, most contemporary fashion is really a reinterpretation of styles from the past, and you would be surprised how close a lot of modern designer clothing comes to replicating older garments. Finding and wearing one such garment is an easy way of avoiding a costume-y look.

2. Contemporary hair and makeup. Chances are, unless you are dedicating hours to recreating precise vintage hairstyles and makeup application, your hair and makeup are already going to look comparatively modern. Simplicity in hair and makeup is a tried and true way of grounding a vintage outfit, such as wearing a 1950’s dress with a slicked back ballerina bun or pairing an Edwardian blouse with a subtly smoky eye. Even contemporary versions of classic hairstyles will update a look while still giving a nod to the appropriate era; modernized 1940’s loose waves — which have been a Hollywood favorite for the past couple of years — are a great example.

3. Modern accessories. Pairing vintage clothing with decidedly modern shoes, bags and sunglasses is an easy way to dramatically ground an otherwise whimsical garment. It is easy to keep the overall look streamlined by picking a color that is present in the garment and wearing contemporary accessories in the same color. Of course, pops of vibrant color paired with all black accessories (or vice versa) is also a quick way to modernize a classic vintage garment.

4. Mixing vintage and new separates. Years ago, while waiting in line at a coffee shop, I saw a woman wearing a white Edwardian blouse with a zip up sweatshirt and torn up jeans and I still consider her to be one of the best examples I’ve seen of wearing vintage and new separates in a way that is both very modern and entirely unique (wherever you are, mysterious lady, you are still my #1 girl crush.) Mix-n-matching vintage and new separates is probably the easiest way of beginning to work vintage into your wardrobe, as well as a simple way of taking a very special, fancier vintage piece and making it more wearable for day.

5. Mixing eras. Even when wearing head-to-toe vintage, accessories included, it is possible to accessorize in ways that make your outfit seem more relevant. Mixing eras can, surprisingly, have the same effect as blending new and vintage pieces. Unexpected pops of vibrant color, surprising combinations of textiles and silhouettes and layers of contrasting patterns always serve to make an outfit appear both uniquely modern and totally timeless. In fact, mixing eras may just be the most fun and exciting way to wear vintage!

Have you ever been curious about vintage stores full of amazing treasures, unique pieces and designer originals but have been worried you might end up looking like an extra from a period movie set? There are many reasons to love vintage clothing: from the unique design, quality fabrics & tailoring, to the historical value and, of course, the ability to score designer attire at a fraction of the price.

But incorporating these one-off beautiful pieces into your wardrobe can be a challenge: how do you wear vintage clothes and still look current and stylish?

Now, before we dive into the tips and tricks I’ve got for you, let me say that wearing head to toe vintage can look stunning, breathtaking and traffic-stopping. But this is a commitment to just one style period not many of us are prepared to make so here are 5 tips if you are looking for some interesting ways to incorporate vintage pieces into your current wardrobe.

FORGET PERFECTION

40’s, 50’s and 60’s fashion has one thing in common: perfection in every detail, from immaculately ironed clothes to skillfully coiffed hair. The easiest way to create a “fresher” outfit is to break through this impeccable styling and to go for a messier, nonchalant look. Go ahead and pop that collar, roll up the sleeves or go for a messier hair bun. The whole outfit shouldn’t look like you’ve tried too hard… easy-breezy-beautiful.

CONTRAST WITH DENIM

Mixing your vintage pieces with denim is one of the easiest ways to break up a head-to-toe classic look. This is especially true for more dressier items you might want to wear in the day time. Denim immediately adds a casual element and updates any vintage item.  For example, try to pair a vintage blazer with a pair of “boyfriend jeans” and trainers or 40’s full skirt with a denim jacket.

MIX FORMAL WITH CASUAL

A little variation on the previous point, but one of the most difficult to achieve in a balanced way. If you look at photos of street-style fashionista’s you will notice an effortless mix of formal and casual styles. Use these looks as an inspiration. For example, an 80’s pencil skirt can be worn with a fresh white T-shirt or with an oversized sweater. You could get really creative and experiment not just with the pieces from your own wardrobe but also with the ones from your partner.

 NATURAL HAIR AND MAKEUP

One of the quickest ways to style a vintage outfit in a fresh and current way is to keep hair and makeup neutral. Avoid a full-on theatrical makeup and hair and stick to natural styling for a modern look. This is an especially good tip for when you don’t have so many items to mix and match, like when you are wearing a dress or a pantsuit.

BLEND DECADES

Perhaps the most difficult tip to get right is to mix decades in one outfit. The best way to get this right is to just practice, practice and practice. Sometimes, the most wonderful unexpected results come from a lot of trial and error. Try to not just mix the pieces but their traditional wearing order to get the most interesting looks: why not to wear a 90’s T-shirt or a thin sweater under a 40’s dress or throw a modern parka jacket over a 50’s dress. Go wild, you know you want to!

Do you love vintage clothing, but you are nervous to wear them because you are afraid of looking vintage yourself? In this video I’m going to tell how to wear vintage but not look old.

I love vintage clothing and accessories and over the years, vintage clothing has become really fashionable. In fact, you will often see vintage inspired clothing around in stores. But how do you wear the clothing so you don’t look like you are living in a time warp?

Don’t try to do your era the same way twice. For example, I was a teen in the 80’s and when I think back to the things I owe, I cringe. But even with the 80’s coming back, I won’t wear the same things in the same way. Big hair example.

Mix vintage with modern: Going all out vintage can make you look like you are going to costume party. Mixing vintage with modern will give it a contemporary edge and a style that is uniquely yours.

For example, I love this green leather jacket that comes from the 70’s. I wear it with a pair of jeans for casual or these printed pants for a bold look.

Vintage doesn’t have to look old: This leather coat I bought in Milan at the vintage market is still in great condition. In fact, you might not know it’s vintage unless I told you so. Look out for good quality vintage pieces.

If it is old and needs repair, have it fixed: Some vintage pieces look stylishly worn and some just look old. If it looks old, either fix it or get rid of it.

Wear vintage inspired pieces: This is a great way to add modern styling to vintage looks. For example, as you may know by now, I love the wrap dress and sell many of them in my own collection. This dress definitely has a 70’s inspired print, which is why I love it, but it isn’t vintage.

How can I start wearing vintage without feeling like I’m wearing a costume?

Start by choosing just one vintage item and pair it with contemporary items. Most of the time people won’t even realize you are wearing vintage. Did you know that almost all contemporary designs are inspired by vintage pieces?

Choosing vintage accessories is a great beginner’s way of dipping your toes into the vintage pool.

Why should I choose to wear vintage clothing?

Vintage clothing is often higher quality with better tailoring and attention to details. The fabrics are mostly natural such as cotton, silk, linen or wool and more comfortable to wear. Corners were rarely cut when creating vintage pieces. Items will have finished seams, linings, pockets, etc.

Vintage clothing creates a strong personal sense of style. No one else will look like you.

 Is vintage clothing expensive?

Vintage clothing can be expensive, especially if you are after designer pieces but generally you will pay less for vintage than you would pay for a similar quality piece purchased retail.

Were can I buy vintage clothing?

You can sometimes find vintage pieces at thrift stores, estate sales or you can shop retail for vintage clothing at independent stores in your city. You can also shop for vintage online through Etsy where I also have my store, Vintage By Suzanne.

How can you tell if an item is vintage?

Look at the label. Most vintage pieces will be made in a country other than China or Vietnam.

Vintage labels look different from our contemporary labels. This is a great article on how to date vintage clothing from the label and shows examples of vintage labels.

What should I be aware of when buying vintage clothing?

Understand that the older the piece the more fragile it will be. Here are some things to check and be aware of.

  • Make sure to check the seams. Sometimes these may need to be reinforced.
  • Look for moth holes. Hold the item up to the light and turn it inside out. Normally when you find one moth hole you will find others.
  • Check the closures. Make sure all the buttons are there and the zipper works correctly.
  • Try it on. Most of the time I don’t spot problems or stains until I’ve tried on the piece.
  • Many stains are superficial and can be removed quickly with Oxyclean stain remover. Be aware however that certain stains such as sweat or oil can be very difficult to remove.
  • Occasionally vintage clothing may have an “old” smell attached to it. I have an easy solution to removing all bad smells from clothing here. Alternatively, you can have the piece dry-cleaned.
  • If you buy your vintage item from a thrift store be sure to remove any surface stains by spot cleaning and then put the item (dry) in your dryer on high for thirty minutes. This removes any chance of bed bugs. I recommend washing the item too if possible. Generally items bought via thrifting have not been cleaned.
  • If you can’t wash the item though, a quick spray with Febreeze and then a toss in the dryer on high for thirty minutes will freshen the item quickly.

Vintage Clothing

Vintage is used to describe items which were made in the 1920s or later (but not later than 20 years before the present year). It refers to the age of the item, rather than the style of it. People often make the mistake of calling a modern-day 1920s flapper dress from a fancy dress store ‘vintage’, but unless it was made 20 years ago (or earlier), it’s not vintage. Even though it might have an old style, it cannot be vintage if it was manufactured in the last 20 years.

Now, in 2016, anything made between 1920 and 1996 is technically vintage, although it doesn’t mean that everything has a ‘vintage’ appeal. Fur coats, for example, were highly popular in the 1960s, and since they were made during this era too, they are now considered vintage. Fur coats are appealing to many fashion lovers, despite the controversy which has surrounded them since the 1980s. A regular blouse from 1955 doesn’t have the same appeal as a fur coat.

It’s not limited to just clothes either – the word ‘vintage’ can be used for clocks and other ornaments (such as lava lamps made in the 1970s), as well as radios, cars, cabinets and jewelry.

Interestingly, the word originated from the French ‘vendage’, which means ‘grapes picked during a season’. It was first used to describe old wine.

The majority of vintage wearers have, in their lifetime of wearing vintage, experienced various reactions from members of the general public. Sometimes these reactions can be simply genuine curiosity at an obviously different fashion choice, and sometimes, unfortunately, it can be negative. Probably one of the most universally asked questions, is “Are you wearing a costume?” or something to that effect. In my case (several years ago) it was, “So you are dressed like this . . . why?” – implying that there had to be some kind of external reason as to why I was wearing that 1950’s hat, fur collar, wool coat and high heeled pumps.

My answer: “Because I like it.”

Many people seem to think that anyone who dresses outside of the societal norm, simply must be wearing a costume. Someone wouldn’t be wearing a hat and gloves and a dress like, for real, would they?

I’ve been thinking about this lately, and trying to figure out my thoughts about it. I would suggest that, while I don’t really like the term “costume”, to some extent, anyone who dresses outside of the mainstream, is in fact putting on some sort of specific persona. It is easy to dress in the fashions of the day (look in every store and you’ll find some kind of iteration of the trends) but it is a conscious choice to dress differently than every one else. Whether you are wearing vintage style, goth, rockabilly or any other alternative style, you are saying something about yourself to those who see you.

After much thought (OK actually not that much thought, but some discussion with my mom!), I think it all comes down to your reason for wearing it.

How we choose to dress, tells a story about us. Your clothes can tell people, “I’m a rebel”, “I want to blend in”, “I want to be different” or even simply “I like old stuff”.

If someone were to look at me, they might not be surprised to learn that I also like classic novels, painting, antique furniture and old houses. My clothing has given them a glimpse into what kind of person I am; or at least the image that I want to present to the world.

Choosing to dress differently does raise questions, though, and like I said the most common one is, why are you wearing a costume?

Wearing vintage, or another alternative style, though, is a lifestyle. At least it is for me, and many others. The decision to wear vintage style, as your “regular” clothes changes it from being a costume that you put on only at certain times, to being an expression of your own style personality. You don’t have to wear vintage 24/7 either, in order for it to not be a costume for you. While it might be a putting on of a persona, it is also a reflection of your own style and personality. To those people who question you, it is a costume to them, because they can’t imagine themselves wearing it; it is foreign and uncommon. To many people it is unheard of that these could be your “real” and “normal” clothes. (But, what is normal anyways?)

When I, and many others, wear vintage styles we are not just trying to be different. There are plenty of styles I could wear that would achieve the same purpose, but would definitely not be “me”. Wearing Steampunk is probably very fun- but it’s not something I would personally choose to do!

And you know what? I sometimes put together an outfit which I think looks great in my head, and doesn’t really come out that way when I wear it. Something is just not right with it, and so it does end up feeling a bit like a costume. This outfit here is one example of an outfit that came out as just too much. To me personally, I would like to stress. Even though others might think, “that’s so you- it’s got a vintage touch, pearls and a hat”- to me, this was a costume.

I look at this outfit, and I know that I was playing dress up. (Which I was; we just wanted to experiment with taking photos in this location, so I grabbed a few things and threw them on) I would never wear this outfit in real life; the twill trousers are far too casual to be wearing with this hat and blouse, and the hat doesn’t go with anything. If I were to tweak this into an actual outfit, I would pair the blouse with navy blue wool trousers or a skirt, my camel coloured blazer to coordinate with the hat, and I would probably take off the long strings of pearls replacing them with a single strand. That’s just me. Someone else might wear this, and they’d love it!

Ultimately, each person must decide for themselves what the line is between “different” and “costume”. Fashion is supposed to be fun, so if you feel like wearing a costume out and about, there’s no one stopping you! Sometimes you just want to dress up! But, if you are trying to determine whether something is clothing for you or whether it’s a costume, here are some questions you could ask yourself:

  • Do you feel more confident wearing this outfit?
  • Are you constantly thinking about what people are thinking about your outfit? I’m not talking about shyness, and sometimes feeling a little awkward because you look different. I mean: are you completely uncomfortable because all you can think about is what other people are thinking of your outfit?
  • Are you absorbed with your outfit and fussing with it constantly? Aka- you don’t actually feel comfortable wearing it. Once you put on an outfit, you should not be preoccupied with it, if it’s just clothes.
  • Is it an expression of things that you like? Or are you wearing it simply because it’s “vintage”, but not because you actually like it?
  • Are you just waiting for the moment you can get home and change into something else?
  • Are you drawn to a certain era or style, but this outfit is just too much? For example, someone might wear 1920’s styles, but they might not dress completely like a flapper with a headband, pearls, fringed dress and all.
  • Do you enjoy wearing this? Is it fun for you? Is it the right expression of your personality? For the same reason I wouldn’t dress goth, you might not want to dress a certain way either.

Well, I hope that these thoughts may have helped you to think through what defines costume vs. style for you.

There’s a lot of misconception out there on vintage or retro style. Many people think they can’t pull it off.  Others are afraid they’ll look out of place, or draw too much attention to themselves.  And still others are unhappy with their total look because they feel too much like they’re in fancy dress or costume.

We all have those random days when things don’t come together quite as well as we had hoped, but here’s some simple tips from me on how to not look costumey when wearing vintage or vintage inspired clothing.

For me, those are the top two ways I see vintage fashion worn.  There’s no right or wrong answer here- it’s all up to you and what you want to do with your look.  If you’re going for head to toe period- it’s time to dig into those original period sources.  If you’re going for a vintage inspired look, let overall aesthetic be your guide.

In the way you’ve dressed previously, what have been your favorite looks?  Chances are, if your past style sense had a general “feel” to it, you can find an equivalent in vintage fashion.  Are you a tomboy?  A girly girl?  Avante Garde artist?  Sensible and practical?  A career woman?  Well, regardless of what your lifestyle is, chances are there’s a vintage equivalent to you.  1920’s girls didn’t all wear fringe, 1930s girls didn’t all wear bias cut gowns, and 1950’s girls didn’t all wear poodle skirts.  So go poke around online (I suggest pinterest), and if one look grabs you instantly as something you would wear in real life, add it to your pin board.  There’s no real “right” or “wrong” way to dress in an era, because there were so many different styles in every single decade.  In fact, old magazines suggested you dress by “type”, just like fashion magazines of today.

There’s a reason you find these at somewhat racy lingerie stores.  Yes, they did very occasionally wear them, but, if you must wear stockings, search out nude ones with nude seams.  You don’t need to scream to the world “Look!  I’m wearing seamed stockings!” because they’re so contrasted in tone.  There should be a sort of overall aesthetic to your look, and perhaps people won’t even realize you’re wearing seamed stockings if they’re nude on nude, but it will just look *right*.  After all, you want to evoke a look in entirety, not break up the eye to a bunch of randomly “correct” details.  Harmony, simplicity, and natural looks.  Which brings me to…

What’s going to speak the most out of the outfit you’re wearing?  Is it your dress print?  Your crazy novelty pin?  Your bakelite bangles? Your crazy hat?  I’m ALL for crazy, loud, and novelty print.  But the thing that keeps you from looking costumey is picking ONE statement thing.  Maybe two.  But certainly not more than three.  For example- crazy hat, crazy brooch, solid dress- works.  Crazy hat, crazy print dress, crazy brooch- doesn’t work in general (sure, there are the rare exemptions).  If in doubt, keep it simple.  Sometimes red lipstick is enough of a statement in itself.

How do you feel when you’re wearing your outfit?  Do you feel like yourself, or do you feel like you’re charading as someone else?  Are you self conscious, or are you confident?  Our clothes can do amazing things for us.  But they can also make us feel out of sorts.  I think a lot of this comes down to practicality.  For example- I can’t clomp around in 3″ heels.  Ok, so I can for a VERY short time.  But i’m a klutz, and chances are I’ll trip over myself.  I would have to consciously watch my step and make sure I’m not going to trip/fall/make a general spectacle of myself.  If you’re thinking about a single article of your clothing more than you are what you’re doing or enjoying the company you’re with, it’s time to re-think that choice.  Sometimes it’s as simple as adding insoles or heel grips to a shoe, or holding a hat in place with a hat pin, or finding a lipstick that doesn’t go all over the place when you eat (and how do we always get it either on our chin or on our teeth?  Ok, maybe it’s just me).  But your style should appear conscious but effortless, and part of that is finding pieces that fit in with you and your lifestyle.

It should be simple in essence, but sometimes it’s not.  One you’ve got one you’ve found that works for you and your face shape, you’re good to go.  It’s ok to do it over and over, or variations on that hairstyle, if it works.  Like clothing, there’s no “right way” to do hair for any given time period.  Check out photos of real people if you’re intimidated by the super polished looks you see other bloggers, or movie stars, wear.  Not everyone needs to have perfectly polished victory rolls to have vintage style.  And if you’ve got a flat spot, just add a hair flower or hair ornament, or hat.  People will think it’s intentional.  Really.  Just keep in mind pointer #3 when you look at the overall look.

Some people can pull off the super dramatic makeup or pin-up style. I can’t.  If you also can’t, I’m here to tell you there’s hope for us.  Go by the old standby- pick what’s the focus- lips or eyes.  Red lips, simple eyes.  Bold eyes, simple lips.  You don’t need concealer + foundation + powder, unless that’s what you normally do.  My old standby for makeup is red lips, nude eyes with medium brown crease, and maybe eyeliner if I’m feeling adventurous.  And if you aren’t comfortable with red lips, that’s totally ok!  There were a variety or red, pink, and corals that were worn through many different vintage decade.  I often wear a lip stain instead of a lipstick, even when doing daily vintage inspired looks, and you know what?  It totally works.

This is probably not something that comes up too often on style tips, but one of the big things that makes something look more costumey than like clothing is the fit.  If you see sets of wrinkles going across any part of your body, it’s probably too tight.  If it doesn’t hug your curves or if it droops, it’s probably too loose.  Find something in the middle and the fit is just right.  There’s not much we can do about too tight, so if you’re faced with the choice ALWAYS get the one that’s a little too big.  You can either take it in yourself, or go to a tailor and get it altered to fit you perfectly.  It is an extra step and sometimes an extra expense, but it’s SO worth it to have clothing that fits you just right.  If you’re not sure where to find a place that does alterations, ask a local dry cleaner or do a search for alterations in your area.  And if it’s vintage, make sure you tell them to not cut out the extra fabric that’s there after the seams or hems are taken in- there may be a time you want to let it out later!

We all have things we don’t like about our appearance or body type, but instead of festering about that, why not turn that around to something positive?  What’s something you LOVE about the way you look?  Do you have a tiny waist?  Emphasize it!  Great décolleté?  Wear more boat necks.  Long legs?  You can look tall and elegant in trousers and knee length skirts.  Pretty hair?  Add ornaments some pretty comb or flowers to your hear, or wear hats that really make everyone look at your hair.  Love the color of your eyes?  Wear colors close to your face that bring out that color.  Underplay the points you don’t like, emphasize the ones you do like.  And if someone pays you a compliment, don’t tell them what you don’t like about yourself or your look- just kindly say “thank you!” and give them a big smile 🙂

Once you’ve selected your look for the day, embrace it.  Don’t fuss in every mirror.  Don’t wonder if people are looking at you.  If people compliment you, give them big smile, look them in the eye, and thank them.  If they ask you funny questions “Are you in a play?”,  or ask a question or make a comment on your style, just be kind back and tell them you just like to wear vintage styles.  Most people are just curious, and some may even want to take up the look themselves!  Don’t take every notice as something negative.  Feel good about your choice, and just keep on enjoying your life.  Confidence and happiness are contagious 🙂

Style short hair with bangs; — September 20, 2018

Style short hair with bangs;

Styling short hair with bangs is an awesome way to shake up your current mid-length style, grow out a shorter cut, or just get a whole fresh new look. Bangs draw attention to your beautiful eyes and can accentuate your cheekbones as well. Another amazing perk of having bangs is that they’re the fastest way to looking “styled.” If you’re short on type but still want to look your best, you can focus on getting your bangs just right and pull the rest of your hair back in a quick up-do.

There are almost as many different types of bangs as there are types of hair cuts! Bangs are so popular because they’re flattering and versatile. If you’re bored with a plain bob or lob, or you want to change up the look of shorter style like a pixie cut, bangs are an easy way to dramatically change the look of your style – even if you don’t change anything else! The “2018” bangs style is all about eye-grazing blunt bangs, choppy cuts, and romantic sides-swept styles.

Blunt bangs are thick, full, and one single length. Most of the time they fall between the eyebrows and upper lids in length, but they can be worn shorter for an edgier look. It’s common to see blunt bangs taper slightly down at the edges to blend in with the rest of the hair. Choppy bangs are cut straight across or at an angle, and the pieces of hair are cut at different lengths to give it a softer edge and that classic choppy look. This is a common style with short pixie cuts but also looks great with bobs and lobs.

Side-swept bangs can be long or short. They do a really beautiful job at softening up blunt, modern styles and also complement waves very well. Side-swept bangs can give the illusion of length when paired with a short cut and can add totally new shape and movement to mid-length cuts.

This is one moody ‘do from the color to the style. The layered bob with bangs is cut long (shoulder-length) and the wispy bangs are short but perfectly accent the longer layers in the rest of the cut. The dark silver balayage is simply gorgeous. We love that this is styled super straight but has the perfect amount of volume on the top and sides to make it feel really glam.

46) Natural Medium Length Women’s Haircut

Natural Medium Length Women's Haircut

This is a perfect example of how you can use your natural texture for low maintenance short hair with bangs that looks great! This style works best with fine and/or silky hair textures that are naturally straight. It’s a basic shoulder-length bob and full, choppy bangs that are the only “layers” in the cut. This totally gives, “I woke up like this,” vibes.

47) Layered Blonde Bob With Choppy Bangs

Layered Blonde Bob With Choppy Bangs

A layered bob with bangs gives you amazing texture, dimension, and depth. If your hair is a little bit thin or fine, you can “fake” thicker texture with a cut like this. Loads of layers are cut all around the bob and the choppy ends soften up the cut. The choppy bangs are an extension of the layers and give the style a nice finished look. Don’t let the style fool you, you will NOT roll out of bed looking like this! Daily effort is definitely required.

48) Sunburnt Red Ombre Bob With Short Choppy Bangs

Sunburnt Red Ombre Bob With Short Choppy Bangs

Hello, surfer girl! This cut is beach-worthy and while the color is anything but natural, it somehow looks like it because of the burnt ombre effect. The style itself is actually really classic: chin-length short hair with bangs. There are 2 features that set this off. First, the bangs are styled really blunt, straight, and with a tiny bit of choppiness that makes them really stylish. That color does all the rest of the work so there’s no mistaking this for a dated look.

49) Sleek Glossy Bob With Eye-grazing Bangs

IF hair you owe it to yourself to get this haircut at least once in your life. This is so glamorous we can barely take it. Totally Linda Evangelista in her prime. Chin length blunt bob, choppy eye-grazing bangs, shiny straight styling. It’s hair perfection!

50) Gorgeous Curly Bob and Bangs

Gorgeous Curly Bob and Bangs

Do not let anyone tell you that if you have curly hair you can’t rock bangs or a bob, or both at the same time, darn it! This curly short hair with bangs is proof positive that you can. It’s all about cutting the shape to work WITH your curls and using the right product to define them.

FACTS ABOUT HAVING SHORT HAIR STYLE

1. It’s different.

What may seem like a drastic hairstyle change for you is generally indiscernible to guys. So while I don’t notice the difference between “blown out” and “natural” and whatever, I do understand the concept of length. Shorter: gotcha.

A woman intentionally changing her appearance is almost always a win. It’s like returning from vacation with a tan, undergoing an Olivia Newton John in Grease-esque makeover, or posing for an “after” shot in a Proactive commercial. Cutting your hair short is like reinventing yourself and reinvention is sexy—especially if I notice it.

2. It shows confidence.

It seems like cutting your hair can be a frightening and potentially traumatic experience, like everyone who donates to Locks of Love is immediately enlisted in the Marines.

I can relate to an extent. During my first haircut, my hysterical crying could only be pacified by a roomful of supportive family members and endless supply of cotton-candy flavored Dum Dums. So I get it: Cutting your hair is difficult.

When a woman takes that chance, faces her fears head-on (see what I did there???), and shows up on Monday rocking the socks off a pixie or bob or bowl cut (which I sported for about a decade), she’s got a fan in me.

3. It puts you in good company.

I couldn’t name three curly-haired celebrities or three wavy-haired celebrities, partially because again, in guys’ minds, what’s the difference? Short-haired celebs, though? I’ve got about a dozen on deck.

So when a girl goes from “Party in the USA” to “We Can’t Stop” up top, I immediately associate her with other short-haired beauties: Rihanna, Pink, Amber Rose, Demi Moore in GI Jane, Beyonce for, like, the span of one Instagram photo, and Robyn, among others. Anything you can do to liken yourself to Jennifer Lawrence is a big win.

4. It accentuates your beautiful features.

Namely your face and the pretty stuff attached to it.

Once I told a female friend I was dating a girl with a buzz cut. “Oh, she must be really pretty,” my friend responded. “If her hair is that short, she definitely has a gorgeous face.” And she totally did! I’m not sure how she knew this or why it’s true, but I’ll just accept it and move on.

Short hair also shows off and elongates your neck, which I love almost as much as everything above and below it. And less hair means more ears. I had no idea how much I loved your ears, mostly because, thanks to your long hair, I sort of forgot you had them.

5. It’s out of the way.

As much as I love touching and smelling and doing other creepy-sounding things to your hair, it can be a nuisance. When we kiss, I’m repeatedly moving it out of your face because gravity. When cuddling and/or sleeping, it’s somehow always getting into my nose and mouth, suffocating me. If I ever ask to be the little spoon, you know why.

Short hair alleviates these issues and provides easy access to your scalp, the most underrated and underutilized frontier for sensual touch north of the belly button.

6. It grows back.

If you are thinking of adopting this trend before making the change it is important to talk with a good professional to find out if this length suits your type of face and hair. This tip is essential for anyone who is thinking of making a radical change since the shortcut can not match some types of faces.

Before taking any decision, it is also important to know that short hair is ideal for a striking personality of women, and especially for those who have not attached the locks. Who chooses the short length should let go of long hair since it is a very radical change. But despite being radical, it is a great alternative to modern women who want to change the look and renew.

The Peaked short cut is a classic that never goes out of fashion. What differentiates this cut from others is its length which is slightly higher on the sides and the fringe that gives a special charm. As it is done in layers, to leave the tamed and beautiful hair, drying should be done with the help of fingers to show the rough ends that leave the most stripped cut. It is interesting to know that peaked shortcuts are best suited for women with an oval face.

These are the female short hair cuts that are more successful with women and that are up right now. But there are several other types of shortcuts to choose from. Remember that before taking the short cut, it is important to consult a trusted professional and think about it to know if you are really willing to abandon the medium or long hair. After that just set the model that has to do with your style and make the change!

Hard to choose the best short cut, is not it? There are many styles that it is difficult to choose one that suits your style options. To help you choose the ideal model for you, here are several photos of female short hair. Enjoy ideal for inspiration!

How you can wear sneakers and look good with any type of style; —

How you can wear sneakers and look good with any type of style;

casu.jpg

In case you’ve been living under a rock, your sneakers are meant for more than just the gym these days. Though they got their start as flimsy “plimsolls” meant for working-class holidaymakers and purpose-built footwear designed for athletes, sneakers have become a staple in a every man’s (and woman’s, for that matter) wardrobe. From lifestyle to red carpet to sports, nowadays your sneakers can be an expression of yourself. And today we’re showing you how to do it right.

Sneaker Rules: The Basics

No matter what kind of sneakers you settle on, there are a few basic principles for how to wear sneakers.

Always:

  • Buy sneakers that suit your current wardrobe: What good does it do to buy the latest ‘hype’ style if it doesn’t suit your style? Don’t hop on the trend train just because it’s passing through. Choose shoes that complement what you already have, not shoes that require you to repurchase your entire wardrobe. We’re looking at you Yeezy lovers.
  • Wear them to the right occasions (don’t go too casual): Sneakers are incredibly versatile, but they’re no substitute for dress shoes. You can get away with sneakers with any off-duty outfit – and perhaps even some casual, unstructured suits – but they’re not meant for every occasion (i.e. weddings). Err on the side of overdressed rather than underdressed.
  • Keep them clean: It doesn’t matter how cool your sneakers are, the effect will be lost if they’re not spick-and-span. Proper sneaker maintenance includes washing the laces, eliminating odours, brushing the outsoles, and using shoe trees and sneaker shields.

Understanding Your Sneakers & Trainer Types

Sneakers come in many shapes and sizes these days. From the very basic to the brightest leather, from the minimal to the metal fastenings, there are few rules when it comes to your trainers. With so many options available, it can be hard knowing exactly what’s what and even harder to know what’s most likely to suit your wardrobe and taste.

Luckily, you have us here to make things easier. We’ve put together a How To Wear Sneakers Style 101 guide that should have you acing your footwear exams in no time.

  • Basic Sneakers – These are your Converse, Vans, etc., types. Sometimes they come in leather, but they’re typically found in canvas and in basic colours. On the whole they’re generally affordable and easy to wear / clean.
  • Refined Luxury Sneakers – They might bear a resemblance to the basic sneakers, but they’re more expensive and often made from suede or leather by brands like Tom Ford, Lanvin & Saint Laurent. These are not something you take to a music festival.
  • Classic Sports Sneakers – Think Nike Air Max 90, Reebok Pump, Asics, Tiger and other forms of old school sport greatness. What was once ready for the track and field is now kept safely in a shoe collection at home.
  • Current Sport Sneakers – Again, these are your Nike, Adidas and Puma brands, but with modern styling and shapes.
  • High-fashion Sneakers – These are the work of brands like Givenchy, Christian Louboutin, Maison Martin Margiela, Diemme and even Giuseppe Zanotti. They’re loud and designed to be noticed.
  • High Tech – This special group may not be universally recognised yet, but I hear by dub it “High Tech.”  This is the category for the likes of Rick Owens and other designers who are really pushing the limits of sneaker design.

What You Need To Know To Get The Best Look

Now that you’ve selected your poison, it’s time to actually pair them with your wardrobe. And no, it’s not a case of wearing your one pair of sneakers with any pair of jeans. There’s a fine art in the craft so pay attention.

Cons, Chucks, canvas kicks… whatever you call them, the basic sneaker is the most versatile casual sneaker you can buy. They work well with denim, chinos and shorts of pretty much any colour and shade.

Where I find guys sometimes get a little unstuck with these types of sneakers is when they wear them to smart casual events or to work when a dress shoe is required. The basic sneaker DOES NOT work for every occasion and should be kept solely for casual situations. Your best bet on top is to run with print t-shirts, gingham shirts or even a blazer for the college professor look.

  • Mix with relaxed, slim & skinny denim and chinos
  • Keep for casual/street occasions only
  • Maintain to ensure they stay clean and respectable
  • Best suited to younger men

Refined Luxury Sneakers

My personal favourite is the luxury take on the basic sneaker. These beautiful specimens have allowed sneakers to jump from street casual to smart casual without looking like they belong on a teenage boy. They can be worn with tailored trousers, slim denim, chinos and in some cases even casual unstructured suiting.

I tend to avoid wearing them with shorts, as these sneakers are quite often bulky in comparison to the basic canvas sneakers. Keep it refined on top to match the shoe. Basic t-shirts, smart shirts and polos are all great options. For a more distinct look, opt for a shirt with a slim or knit tie, a blazer and some slim denim.

  • Dress up, not down
  • Start with black, then purchase other colours
  • Take extra care with suede and don’t wear it too often
  • Try brighter pairs for summer / European holidays

Classic Sports Sneakers

Sneakerheads, unite! These babies started the sneaker revolution that we have today. Jordans, Pumps, 90s – these are your street-going, hip-hop kicks that are just popping with colour. The idea with classic sports sneakers is to find a couple that complement your style and purchase a few pairs in different colours.

Slim- and tapered-fit denim, loose t-shirts (with or without prints) and casual outerwear are your essential staples when it comes to dressing these sneakers. Pair them with chino shorts for an easy win in summer. The key is to find the balance between hip-hop artist and everyday citizen. Some guys like to rock a snap back – that’s up to you. Personally, I like to colour match my sneakers with what I’m wearing on top, to give the look a sense of purpose and cohesiveness.

  • Find a few styles you like and stick to them
  • Colour match if you can
  • Pin roll, or rock with khaki chinos when it’s warm
  • Sell them on eBay if you don’t like them

Current Sport Sneakers

Wearing this style of sneaker can have you looking like Jerry Seinfeld if you’re not careful. On the other hand, you can quite easily look like a ‘houso’ (chav) if you pair them with tracksuit pants. As much as possible, stick with sneaker releases that are low profile with a fashionable edge.

Too runnery/sporty and they’ll look bulky and not quite right. Wear these as you would classic sneakers or with gym/running gear on the weekend. Steer clear of denim that’s loose fitting, as it never seems to work. Instead choose slim Nudie chinos or elastic cuff variations. On top, keep it sporty and casual with t-shirts only.

  • Avoid all white pairs
  • Don’t tuck shirts into denim with these sneakers
  • Go for a sporty look to compliment the shoe

High-Fashion Designer Sneakers

Expensive and not for the faint of heart, these top end sneakers are getting louder and more in-your-face every season. For an example of someone who wears them well consistently, look to Kanye West. A common approach to wearing these sneakers matches them with slim denim that’s often gathered at the bottom and t-shirts with open plaid shirts. There’s also the parisian style, which includes long and drapey blazers and singlets that add even more edge to the look. Black denim is a must-own item as well as longer, looser fit t-shirts.

  • Stick with blacks, whites and mute colours
  • Let the sneakers to the talking
  • Denim is your best friend

High Tech, High Fashion

Only a few will dare to wear these sneakers. They’re highly fashion-forward and to me only really work with drapey and long fitting clothing. Stick with black and do as little as possible to draw attention to the shoes – they will do that themselves. Ideally you want people to think that you’re not trying too hard when you wear these types of kicks, so muted attire is best.

  • Black, black, and more black
  • Go for long and draped style of clothing
  • Be prepared for people’s comments

How to be elegant

Image result for how to be elegant

How to impress people? Being elegant is the answer; it makes you look feminine, attractive, and mature!

  1. Image titled Be Elegant Step 1
    1

Be clean. Practice good hygiene. Take a shower when you need to and keep your hair clean. Brush your teeth and use deodorant, to keep yourself smelling fresh.
  2. Image titled Be Elegant Step 2
    2

Be tidy. Keep your hair brushed, your nails reasonably trimmed, and any excess body hair should also be carefully maintained to reasonable lengths.
  3. Image titled Be Elegant Step 3
    3

Use subtle makeup. Use only enough concealer, foundation and powder to even your skin tone and cut down on shine. Eye shadow and lip colors should be subtle and use neutral tones line browns and grays. Eyeliner and mascara should be minimal.

    • There are occasions, however, where bolder lip colors may be appropriate. If you are going out for a formal evening, for example, bright red lips may be warranted.
  4. Image titled Be Elegant Step 4
    4

Choose sleek hairstyles. When you think elegant women you usually think Audrey Hepburn, Veronica Lake, or Nicole Kidman. And what do they have in common? That sleek, beautiful hair, of course. Choose hairstyles which show off the satin quality of your hair and compliment your features and dress style. This will give you a more elegant look.
  5. Image titled Be Elegant Step 5
    5

Get your nails done. Good choices for nail polish are pale pink, clear, or a french manicure. But remember that any colour can look elegant, it all depends on how you carry it off. Don’t rule out any colour – including black – unless you don’t like it. Look at some photos of celebrities’ nails at events. They wear all colours, including black, green, and orange, and many of them still look elegant.
  6. Image titled Be Elegant Step 6
    6

Use good perfume. You may not see when someone smells nice but it will form a certain picture in your mind. Leave a lasting impression by using a subtle perfume, applied correctly. Elegant top notes include scents like:

    • Jasmine
    • Rose
    • Amber
  7. Image titled Be Elegant Step 7
    7

Stand tall. Having good posture will go a long way towards being perceived as elegant. Work on your posture and make sure that you are standing nice and tall. This will also make you look thinner and curvier.

Part2

Dressing Elegantly

  1. Image titled Be Elegant Step 8
    1

Wear nice clothes. Avoid clothes which look overly casual, dirty, stained, or ruined. Don’t wear clothes that have holes or otherwise look distressed. Try to go out in nice – smart but simple- clothes when you run errands.
  2. Image titled Be Elegant Step 9
    2

Wear classic cuts. Avoid trendy clothes like bell-bottom jeans or over-sized shoulder pads. Instead, opt for classic cuts on most items of clothing. This will keep you looking timelessly elegant. Knee length skirts with even hem lines, tailored button-down shirts in men’s style, and knee-length trench coats are among a large number of classic cut items.
  3. Image titled Be Elegant Step 10
    3

Wear clothes that fit. Make sure that the clothes you do have fit. They should not be too small (showing or creating bulges) or too large (hanging from your frame). Don’t get married to a size, every time you try on new clothes, also try on a size up and a size down. Get items tailored, if you can, to ensure an even better fit.
  4. Image titled Be Elegant Step 11
    4

Choose quality fabrics. Lean away from cheap acrylic material or cheap cotton and opt for clothing made from more luxurious materials. This will show and make your clothing look more expensive, even if it isn’t. Silk, satin, modal, cashmere, Chantilly or other quality lace, many sheer fabrics, and limited velvet are all acceptable options. Thick materials that add bulk should usually be avoided, as these will detract from your smooth lines.
  5. Image titled Be Elegant Step 12
    5

Choose high contrast or classic colors. When choosing colors, go for high contrast colors that are very light and dark compared to each other (red, white and black, for example). Classic neutral colors also work well (grey, beige, navy, plum, emerald green, champagne pink, etc.).

    • Other elegant color combinations include blue and gold, pink and white, and white and teal/seafoam.
  6. Image titled Be Elegant Step 13
    6

Keep it simple. Keep your outfits simple: not too many accessories, not too many layers. Avoid patterns and pattern mixing. Don’t get overly showy, either. Jewelry should be simple and should go with what you are wearing and doing. Don’t wear anything that is too dressy for what you’re doing: go for nice, but not unreasonable.

    • For example, a cocktail dress is a bit much for going grocery shopping but a black or navy pencil skirt, a cream-colored sweater and brown jacket and boots are about right. Sweats would be the bad choice; too casual.
  7. Image titled Be Elegant Step 14
    7

Accessorize strategically. Choose accessories which compliment your outfit without going over the top. Accessories should also compliment your features and physique. For example, avoid wide or large earrings if you have a big face, or wear vertically striped stockings to make your legs look longer and thinner.
  8. Image titled Be Elegant Step 15
    8

Keep it classy. Don’t wear clothes that reveal too much skin, are too tight, or use materials which look low-class (leopard print, fuzzy materials, lamé, etc). Dressing this way can make you look cheap or like an escort. It will also make you look like you’re trying too hard. Dress classy by following the advice above and avoiding these pitfalls, and you’ll look elegant all the time.

Part3

Acting Elegant

  1. Image titled Be Elegant Step 16
    1

Speak exceptionally well. Use proper grammar, a broad vocabulary, avoid contractions and colloquialisms, and enunciate when you speak. This will make you come across as classy and elegant, a real lady. If you aren’t in the habit of speak well like this, practice while you are alone, possibly in front of a mirror.

    • Do not feel like you have to take on a different accent in order to sound more elegant. The accent is rarely as much of a problem as vocabulary and grammar.
  2. Image titled Be Elegant Step 17
    2

Stay calm at all times. Do not get overly emotional, either very sad (dramatic crying) or angry (yelling at people and making a scene). This will undo every bit of elegance in an instant. Instead, be calm and relaxed.

    • Remember: if you’re not going to die (and neither is anyone else) it’s probably not that big a deal. Breathe and take things one step at a time.
    • If you find yourself unable to stay calm, excuse yourself and go somewhere private until you calm down.

Act like you don’t care. Like not getting too emotional, you should also give off an air of not caring. This will make you seem more classy and elegant. Getting overly excited or enthusiastic can easily make you seem child-like and immature.

Be polite to everyone you meet, whether you think they deserve it or not. Don’t be passive-aggressive or sarcastic when things go wrong. Just get through all situations with perfect politeness. Treat everyone as if your grandmother were watching you and there was a nice piece of candy in it for you.

Be as graceful as you can be. Walk like a supermodel no matter where you are or how you’re dressed. Take care not to fall or trip when walking in high heels Don’t try to dance above your skill level. If you want to improve your grace, then practice walking, in heels, up and down stairs, etc. You can also practice your hand and leg movements in a full length mirror.

Be confident and act confident. Of course you don’t have to actually be confident (for a lot of people, it’s mostly an act) but act as confident as you can. Tell yourself you’re beautiful, intelligent, and that you know what you’re doing…because you are and you do! Project confidence out to others by not constantly apologizing, for pursuing the things that you want, even if they aren’t popular,

Have excellent manners. Real ladies have perfect manners. Practice good manners as you go about your day and especially when you eat. Don’t ever burp or fart in public. Hold doors open for others and wait your turn for services. Drive courteously. And of course, eat without making a mess or being gross.

Be intelligent. Don’t act dumb just for the sake of it. Sometimes people act dumb to stand out. While you may stand out that way, it won’t be in a way you want! Be careful also not to act like you know everything about every subject. Talk about subjects you truly know about or say you don’t know much about the topic. Your honesty will be appreciated.

CONFIDENCE while wearing dress;

Clothing affects my confidence. It’s not like I’m unconfident without a good outfit, per se, but a killer shoe and a dress I love can help me feel like I’m going to nail an interview or dazzle a social scene. Even if you’re not like me and don’t see a connection between your clothes and confidence, looking into how what we wear affects who we are might be important.

In a study published in Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, medical students who wore lab coats that they were told belonged to doctors performed better on tests than those who wore street clothes or were told the (same) coats belonged to artists. You might be thinking what does this have to do with me? — maybe you already crushed it through med school without doctors’ lab coats, or maybe you failed out of freshman year Chemistry. The details, of course, do not matter, as this is essentially a psychological explanation of “dressing the part.”

There is a direct correlation between what we wear and what we think of our potential. You might’ve heard the saying, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Well if it’s confidence we seek (and don’t we all?), then why not dress the part? You can use style as one of the many tools to boost your self-confidence. So when you find yourself looking through your closet to get dressed in the morning, far from any sort of lab coats, here are some tips to help you dress for your most confident self.

Learn how to dress for your body.

And I mean really learn. Know what denim style looks best on you, what fabric is most flattering, what skirt length is better for your figure, what elongates you best if you’re petite, or what bra size actually fits (we’ve all been there).

Embrace your favorite features

What are your favorite parts of your body? Do you love your long legs, your height, your curves? Find outfits that play up and flatter these features, and mask the features you dislike, to show off what you want people to see, and hide what you don’t.

Know what colors look best on you.

The right colors can make your hair color radiant, your eyes pop, and your skin glow. The wrong colors can make you look sallow, washed out, or even tired. Resort to this guide for finding the right colors for you, or take this quiz to identify your undertones (which dictate everything from which hair colors look best on you to whether you should be wearing gold or silver jewelry).

Think about a time when you felt good in an outfit.

Try to remember an occasion when you felt great in what you wore. Maybe it was a sundress at a summer wedding or a fitted blazer at a board meeting. Think about why you felt good in that. Was it a flattering neckline? Did you like the length? Was it the fabric or the color? Remember what it was that made you feel good about that outfit, and implement that aspect into the rest of your wardrobe. If you liked the halter neckline of the sundress, don’t try to force yourself into a strapless dress for a fancy occasion. Opt for an evening gown with the halter neckline that made you feel good before, and you’re bound to feel good again.

Define your style

The most important secret for confidence is simply to be true to yourself and appreciate your uniqueness. This is the case for dressing as well. Instead of attempting to emulate what’s trendy or someone else’s style, know what you like, both on yourself and on other people. Finding a signature style will help you make every outfit you wear personal, so that you feel confident showing the world (or your boss or friend) who you are.

TAKE TIME TO DEFINE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

Take some time to sit down and figure out how your clothes can best describe your personality and best fit your lifestyle. Put into writing different fabrics or colors that you like, as well as how you would like to feel while wearing these special pieces.

If step 1 is a challenge, head to the internet and usePinterest to help you out!  Use Pinterest to reaearch what types of colors would go best with your skin tone, or what style of dress would best compliment your body shape!

Dresses are a very easy way to look put together in a rush! If you are having trouble envisioning the look, put together your outfit the night before, taking into consideration the event you are dressing for, as well as what accessories could pair best!

Maybe you feel more confident with sleeves, or maybe you feel more confident in a shorter skirt? Maybe you can only enjoy a dress if you have astretchy fabric, and pockets are always a plus!  Whatever your style or what the current trend is, you will never love how you look if you are uncomfortable.

Hopefully these tips can help you begin the process of giving new life to your wardrobe, and give you some inspiration on how to incorporate more dresses into your life!

How to make your style stand out in college —

How to make your style stand out in college

College can be a great time for discovering what you like, fashion-wise, and experimenting with your personal style. However, you may find that, once the initial excitement of being in a new environment has worn off and things like schoolwork and personal responsibilities start piling up, you start falling into a rut of wearing whatever is most convenient… and that your version of that is almost identical to everyone else’s!

Of course, there is nothing wrong with dressing similarly to other people; humans are social animals, and it is natural to want to fit in. Moreover, even if you aren’t intentionally trying to be like others, you may find that what you like just so happens to be what lots of other people like, too–and that’s perfectly okay! After all, many things that are popular are that way because they’ve managed to stand the test of time, and because they work in a lot of different situations.

But, maybe you’re looking to expand your horizons a little, or perhaps you just need to switch things up for a while; either way, you’re in the mood to stand out!

So, keep reading for five tips on how to do just that.

1. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!

If you’ve read some of my articles here on CF, you’ll notice that I always try to pair every outfit with at least one accessory, whether it’s a cute scarf, sparkly jewelry, or fun sunnies. That’s because I firmly believe that the right accessories can take an outfit from plain to fabulous with little to no effort involved–not to mention that buying a couple of accessories can often be cheaper than buying a whole new outfit!

So, if you find that your outfits have been looking a little repetitive lately, why not add a unique accessory into the mix? Not only will doing so make your look stand out, but it’ll hopefully allow you to view the clothes you currently own in a new light.

2. Hit Up Thrift/Vintage Shops

Thrift/vintage shops can be a great way to allow you to participate in current trends without spending too much money (What goes around comes around, after all!); however, they can also be a great source of fashion inspiration when it comes to putting together beautiful looks that might not necessarily be at the forefront of the fashion world at the moment.

As far as I am concerned, the best way to go thrift/vintage shopping is to have as few expectations as possible (since you never know what you’re going to find), and to be ready to hunt around for a while to score something spectacular (because, again, you never know what you’re going to find).

If it’s your first time wearing something vintage, don’t feel pressured to go all out; even if you just pair, say, a thrifted blouse from the ’70s with your usual skinny jeans and ankle boots, you’re still bound to stand out much more than you would if you just paired these pieces with something more basic.

3. Mix and Match Different Style

Oftentimes in the fashion world, clothes are separated into categories, such as feminine, sporty, edgy, etc.; furthermore, it’s often expected that if you wear one thing from a specific category, the rest of your look will also involve pieces from that category.

However, some of the best looks come about when pieces from “clashing” categories are paired together. This is why I totally encourage all college girls who are looking to make their style stand out to branch out of their usual aesthetic and try something from a totally different style.

Some “starter” ideas include wearing a feminine floral dress with an edgy leather jacket and combat boots, pairing a preppy button-up shirt with tomboyish baggy jeans and colored ankle boots, and wearing a casual, loose-fitting sweatshirt with a sequined skirt and flat mules.

4. Consider Changing Up Your Hair/Makeup Routine

Hair and makeup routines are the easiest areas to fall into a rut. After all, finding a look that works for your facial features, budget, and routine can be hard. But, if you’re trying to stand out, changing up your beauty routine–even by adding or taking away just one productcan make all the difference!

So, if you frequently wear natural-looking makeup, why not try adding some red lipstick? Or, if you regularly wear your hair in a messy bun, why not try wearing it down and in its natural texture? Finally, why not try matching an element of your beauty routine to your outfit for the day? (For example, if you’re wearing a green dress, try putting on purple eyeshadow for contrast; or, if you’re sporting a boho look, try putting your hair back in a sleek ponytail for an interesting juxtaposition of aesthetics.)

5. Own Your Personal Style

Regardless of what your personal style is, the ultimate way to stand out from the crowd is to wear what you love and run with it. So, if you really like sporty style, go right ahead and wear a super-cool tracksuit. Or, if you love getting dressed up, don’t be afraid to wear a tulle skirt in broad daylight.

The point is that, sometimes the reason people tend to dress so much alike in college is because people are afraid to look different. And, while this is totally understandable, it also unfortunately tends to get in the way of many people’s self-expression.

Therefore, you should take this as a sign that you shouldn’t be afraid to wear what you want. Even if you end up hating it, you can always try again with something new another time; as I’ve said before, it’s only fashion!

Hopefully these tips have helped inspire you to stand out of the crowd; after all, you’re (usually) only in college once, and there’s no better time to take a style risk than now. So, take a chance; you never know what style discoveries it might lead to!
